Awareness Program 2011: LOAM hosted students Andrew Salib (Waverley Christian College) and Hui Jin Heng & Pamela Poon (McRobertson High School) attended and successfully completed a one day workshop at the laboratory in January. The experiments included i) solar cooker with temperature control, ii) manipulating particles in a coverslip chamber, and iii) electrical circuits on plastic. Student facilitators who helped with this event were Fenfen, Willem Schwalb, and Zhang Ji.

Cultural Exchange: LOAM hosted 4 students from Shanghai Jiatong University (SJTU) in August, 2010. These students were in Melbourne as a cultural exchange program to promote the Monash-SJTU 2+2 program. This program allows students to obtain degrees from both Universities; allowing them to enjoy future niches in an increasingly global economy. This visit was facilitated by Lin.

LOAMFEST 2010: Was held on August 1, 2010 to coincide with Monash University Open Day. Incoming university students, parents and general visitors were invited to have hands-on experience in the laboratory for a range of experiments that highlight the importance of research in engineering education. These included (i) spin to mix, spin to separate, (ii) flatbed scanner science, (iii) droplet races, (iv) bioanalysis on plastic sheets, and (v) they tear differently. Over 100 persons came by on the day and the feedback received was very positive. Facilitators who helped to make this event an overwhelming success were Brandon Cheong, Vu Diep, Romo Herzog, Brendan Yeung, James Whitehill, and William Ling.

Awareness Program 2010: Three Year 12 students from McRobertson Girls' High School
- Hilary Hunt, Michelle Ho, and Sanya Vallath - attended and successfully completed a one day
workshop at the laboratory in January. The purpose was to provide students, keen on
engineering and science, with an opportunity to undertake experiments that will expose them
to possibilities in research. The experiments included i) densitometry of electrophoresis gels,
ii) manipulating particles in a coverslip chamber, and iii) programming a walking robot.
Student facilitators who helped with this event were Han, Fenfen, Mike Robinson, and Rhys Kelly.
Prior to the program, I had a preconceived idea about what researchers did and how they
worked but no real idea. After spending the day with the researchers at Monash, I have a
clearer picture of what it would be like to work in a research environment. The program
gave me an insight into the day to day activities that researchers engage in and has
encouraged me to pursue a career in research myself. - Hillary Hunt

Outreach Projects 2009: Six Year 10 students from Brentwood Secondary College participated in this program. The purpose was to provide students who are keen in engineering and science with an opportunity to carry out projects under supervision. All projects were successfully completed. The project carried out by Jacky Tu and India Donaldson entitled "Solar PicoBotz" was completed with distinction. See video presentation
Major Research Thrusts
Biochemical Analysis TechniquesWe seek to develop better methods, assays, and procedures that enable analysis of substances found in living organisms and the chemical reactions underlying life processes.
Particle/Cell ManipulationOur quest to find novel methods to move particles and cells around to accomplish important functions.
Instrumentation DevelopmentThe natural outcome of experimentation where we produce more advanced sensors, actuators, processors, and software.
